Every parent wants their child to feel safe, loved, and cared for. When children are sick, that care often means staying home, where they can rest, receive comfort, and get the attention they need.
A child with a fever, repeated vomiting, significant diarrhea, or symptoms that prevent comfortable participation in daily activities needs time to recover. Fever accompanied by a cough, runny nose, or sore throat is a reason to stay home. For these illnesses, children should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning, while also meeting their childcare program’s illness policy. Giving medicine to temporarily lower a fever does not mean a child has recovered or is ready for childcare.
Keeping sick children home also helps protect everyone around them. Young children share toys, play closely together, and are still learning hygiene habits. An illness can spread through a classroom and reach siblings, parents, grandparents, and other vulnerable family members.
Please remember that childcare providers care for several children at once. A sick child may need constant comfort, monitoring, and individual attention that is difficult to provide while meeting every other child’s needs. Providers can also become sick, which may affect their ability to remain open and care for the families who depend on them.
We understand that missing work and arranging backup care can be stressful. However, consideration must go both ways. Parents can support their childcare providers by communicating honestly about symptoms and medications, following illness policies, remaining reachable, and arranging prompt pickup when their child becomes ill.
When a provider calls with a health concern, please respond with cooperation and respect. These decisions come from a responsibility to protect your child and every child in their care.
At J-Max & Friends, we value our partnership with families. Working together helps us maintain a healthier, safer, and more comfortable environment for everyone. Keeping a sick child home is an act of care for your child and consideration for the entire childcare community.
